70th Wedding Anniversary

My grandparents made it to a monumental stage in their life. 70 years of marriage. They were married 8 days before pearl harbor; At the ages of 17 and 19 years. My grandpa was a US Marine and was gone for the first year of their marriage. They had 5 daughters and 2 sons. They currently have 26 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren with 2 on the way.

This past weekend we had a party for them in Portland. The party was a month early due to the weather and holiday seasons, it we easier for travelers to attend. I was able to get a ride with my aunts and uncle who were traveling from Utah.
Last year I started to build a strong relationship with my grandparents because I was able to work with them at their living facility. It was a really nice feeling to have grandpa recognize who I was when I showed up. He got a really big smile on his face when I gave him a hug and told him we were going to take him out for the day. He wanted to leave right away and come home with us. Grandma was very happy to see us as well. She of course was able to recognize everyone that came. The event went really well and there were a lot of past friends that were able to come. With most of the family across the country it was hard to get many family members there. Even my trip was a bit last minute and short. I spent just as many hours in the car as I did in Portland but it was worth it to see them again and celebrate with them. Their health has not been very good the last few months. They were however looking great on Saturday. Having people around really helps their health I think.
Congratulations Grandma and Grandpa Allen. We love you!
